World Bank’s Ajay Banga Urges Trade Tariff Reductions for Economic Growth – News and Statistics

Apr 16, 2025

World Bank President Ajay Banga has called on developing countries to reduce trade tariffs to stimulate economic growth. In a report by Yahoo Finance, Banga emphasized that many developing nations maintain higher tariffs compared to advanced economies, and reducing these could mitigate the risk of reciprocal import taxes.

Amidst global uncertainty fueled by U.S. tariffs and retaliatory measures from China and other nations, Banga highlighted the cautious business environment that has emerged. According to IndexBox, the global economic growth forecast remains flat at 2.7% for 2025 and 2026, mirroring the expected growth rate for 2024. This stagnation underscores the World Bank’s warning of the weakest long-term growth outlook for developing economies in 25 years.

The World Bank had previously cautioned that a blanket 10% U.S. tariff could potentially reduce global growth by 0.3 percentage points in 2025 if trading partners retaliate. Banga urged for dialogue and negotiation on trade issues and pointed to the untapped potential in regional integration for developing countries. He stressed the importance of maintaining regional and bilateral trade flows with willing partners.

While acknowledging that trade tensions are affecting business investment appetites, Banga expressed uncertainty about the duration of the current economic paralysis. He remains optimistic that effective negotiations could lead to a swift resolution of trade disputes. Banga reiterated the World Bank’s stance that higher tariffs create friction, reducing transparency and growth—a discussion that has been ongoing for some time.
