Syracuse, N.Y. — Texas Rangers left-hander Patrick Corbin allowed just one run and struck out six to earn his first win with his new club Wednesday night at Globe Life Field in Arlington.
Corbin, a former Cicero-North Syracuse standout, faced just one batter over the minimum across five shutout innings in the Rangers’ 3-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.
“We used his pitches better [Wednesday night],” Rangers catcher Jonah Heim told reporters after the game. “He really stayed off the center of the plate and when they’ve got to put good swings on pitchers’ kinds of pitches, that usually works out pretty well.”
Said Corbin: “We were on the same page and were able to attack these guys the way that we wanted to. It allowed for some quicker outs. I think we had a good combination to keep them guessing.”
Corbin, 35, had not posted an ERA better than 5.20 over his last four seasons. He signed a one-year deal with the Rangers last month to be an innings-eater after injuries opened up a need for starting pitching depth.
Corbin was making just his second start of the season on Wednesday night. He did not pitch in Spring Training.
Corbin made 32 starts for the Nationals in 2024, posting a 5.62 ERA across 174 2/3 innings.
His six-year run with the Nationals ended last year. Corbin led Washington in starts, innings and strikeouts over that span.
“We faced him for eight straight years when I was in Atlanta,” Angels manager Ron Washington told reporters after the game.
“The thing about him is he stays in the ballgame. He might give up some runs, but he stays in the ballgame. He’s savvy. Their pitching just shut us down.”
