The Los Angeles Dodgers may be the best team in Major League Baseball, but they’re not playing like it right now.
After a 2-4 road trip that consisted of sloppy baseball in all three phases of the game, the Dodgers have dropped out of the No. 1 spot in Newsweek Sports‘ MLB Power Rankings.

The Dodgers’ National League West rival San Diego Padres have supplanted the Dodgers in that top spot after another dominant week despite some key injuries.

Elsewhere in the league, the New York Yankees fell a few spots and are no longer the top team in the American League.
Additionally, a couple of last year’s playoff teams took deep dives, while one surprise AL West team skyrocketed up the rankings.

Biggest Risers
Los Angeles Angels (+11)
I didn’t respect the Angels in the first edition of these power rankings. I learned my lesson.
The Angels have won all four series they’ve played this season, and are looking like a serious threat in the AL West under veteran manager Ron Washington.
Their best player from a year ago — shortstop Zach Neto — hasn’t even played yet, and Kyren Paris, who wasn’t supposed to make the Opening Day roster, is putting up historic numbers to start the season.
Detroit Tigers (+7)
The Tigers went on a five-game winning streak against the White Sox and Yankees, sweeping Chicago and outplaying New York in a three-game set.
Jack Flaherty and Casey Mize are pitching incredibly to start the year to combat reigning AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal’s slow start to the season.
Kansas City Royals (+6)
A 5-2 week with series wins over the Orioles and Twins has put Kansas City right back where they belong in the top half of these rankings.
Biggest Fallers
Houston Astros (-6)
The Astros haven’t been able to string together back-to-back wins this season. Their bullpen blew two games in a series loss to the division-rival Mariners this week.
Baltimore Orioles (-5)
The Orioles are in last place in the AL East and haven’t won a series this season. Their 4.54 team ERA ranks 25th in MLB. To make matters worse, their best starting pitcher in Zach Eflin, was placed on the injured list with a lat strain.
Tampa Bay Rays (-5)
The Rays have lost five straight and six of seven. Their most recent loss was an 11-1 beatdown at the hands of the Angels. They allowed six home runs — two to Mike Trout, two to Taylor Ward, and two to Jo Adell.
