The match between John Cena and Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 41 is full of meaning. Not only is the leader of the ‘Cenation’ preparing to participate in the ‘Showcase of the Immortals’ for the last time in his iconic career, but he will be able to write yet another page of wrestling history by winning his 17th world title in Las Vegas on Sunday.
In the latter part of his career, the champion from Boston had repeatedly said that he was no longer interested in titles and just wanted to have fun before starting a new chapter in his life. However, John realized that his last dance would have been even more unforgettable if he had chased this record during his farewell tour and – since his first appearance in 2025 during the Raw premiere on Netflix – he revealed to WWE Universe that he aspired to reach this milestone by the end of the season.
His chances of achieving this feat seemed diminished after the tremendous disappointment at the Royal Rumble – in which he was mocked by Jey Uso against all odds – but his triumph at the Elimination Chamber match and his subsequent heel turn propitiated by The Rock filled Sunday’s match with further meaning.
Ric Flair supports Cody
In recent weeks, fans have been wondering what Ric Flair’s reaction will be if Cena were to detach him in the all-time rankings to win his 17th world title. On the latest edition of ‘UnSKripted’, John’s father tried to answer this question: “You know my dad used to have this saying, god rest his soul, nothing is forever.
Nothing is forever. And I am sure having worked with Ric Flair many many times, I am sure that that great athlete, that great professional athlete Ric Flair who I have nothing but respect for, sits back and says someday it’s going to happen. It has to happen. That’s history. That’s how the world turns.”
‘The Nature Boy’ will have to do all his cheering for ‘The American Nightmare’ on Sunday.
