Mets outfielder Jose Siri briefly covered his face as he was being carted off the field in Saturday’s 3-1 loss to the Athletics at Sutter Health Park.
Moments earlier, he’d fouled a ball off his shin, falling to the ground in visible pain. After being seen by Mets’ trainers, he was replaced by Tyrone Taylor and helped off the field.
After the game, despite the x-rays coming back negative, Siri was seen in crutches. The next day wasn’t much better, according to Mets manager Carlos Mendoza.
“He’s in pain,” Mendoza told reporters. “He walked in this morning and still in crutches. Like I said, he’s pretty sore. Not able to put weight on it. He’s getting treatment right now and (then we’ll) see where we’re at.
Asked if Siri’s injury could result in an IL stint, Mendoza said, “It could be.”
“With the way he’s feeling right now,” he added, “I could see this (as) a potential IL.”

If Siri hits the IL, he’ll be the sixth player on the MLB roster currently occupying the list, which includes pitchers Sean Manaea (oblique), Frankie Montas (lat), Paul Blackburn (knee inflammation), catcher Francisco Alvarez (left hamate) and second baseman Jeff McNeil (oblique).
While his bat has been silent in the early part of the season — he’s 1-for-20 with four walks and eight strikeouts — Siri has shown his value defensively and as a baserunner. While the sample size is limited, the speedy outfielder already has two stolen bases and five runs scored.
One of those runs, scored in Friday’s 7-6 win over the Athletics, was scored on a shallow fly ball by slugger Pete Alonso in the sixth inning. Most baserunners couldn’t score from third on a ball hit 241 feet to shallow right field.
Another one was scored from third on a weak ground ball to the pitcher in the sixth inning of the third game of the season, against the Houston Astros. The run tied the game 1-1.
